With more and more gluten-free options on the shelves these days, we understand that as a consumer, the choice can feel overwhelming. You might be asking yourself “is this item gluten-free?” To eliminate this concern, we are certified with the Gluten-Free Food Program, an organization with one of the strictest certification standards that is endorsed by the National Celiac Association, a non-profit founded in 1993 by individuals with gluten conditions to improve their quality of life. The organization’s long-time partnership with the Harvard Medical School Celiac Research Program adds another layer of credibility that allows them to continue to advance through educational programs and scientific studies.
Why are these certifications important? Learn more about why these gluten-free certifications matter and what they mean.
What is the Gluten Free Food Program?
The Gluten-Free Food Program (“GFFP”)[1], is a certification endorsed by the National Celiac Association (“NCA”). Foods that meet the GFFP’s requirements have a green check mark on their packaging so consumers can quickly recognize which foods are certified. The GFFP certification ensures all products meet 5 ppm (parts-per-million) or less of gluten.
We are proud to announce that FRESCHETTA® gluten-free frozen pizzas are GFFP-certified, making them a great choice for consumers with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease. The FDA states that anything under 20ppm is considered gluten-free and we are well below this amount.
The FRESCHETTA® pizza team went through the GFFP certification process because we care about you. Our goal is to craft pizzas with quality ingredients to elevate your mealtime. Because everyone deserves convenient and delicious foods.
What is the Gluten-Free Certification Organization?
The second certification categorically recognized as gluten-free is the Gluten-Free Certification Organization’s (“GFCO”) This stamp of approval is like the one given by (GFFP), but there is a key difference.
What is the difference between the Gluten-Free Food Program and the gluten-free Certification Organization?
GFFP certification, the one we have, is only awarded to foods with gluten levels 5ppm or lower [2], whereas GFCO certification can be awarded to foods with a gluten level of 10ppm or lower [3].
Why does this matter for gluten free frozen pizza?
While consuming less than 20ppm per day is the guideline, exceeding this amount can cause a harmful effect, according to a study by the National Institute of Health. This is why for foods like pizza, where you have multiple slices or the whole pie, the lower the ppm, the better [4].
